The headline isn’t a rhetorical question. Although Democrats have been hammering McGuire on his absence around the district, I thought it’d be interesting to use his social feeds and newsletter to track what he’s been up to during this week’s congressional recess. And, by extension, what he hasn’t been doing or talking about.
(I almost called this post “I Read John McGuire’s Social Feeds So You Don’t Have To,” but I’m trying to limit the snark here.)
This week, John McGuire…

So what did John McGuire not do?
Mentions of constituents who are facing Medicaid cuts: zero
Mentions of his constituents affected by funding cuts to low-income schools: zero
Mentions of farmers affected by cuts to agricultural programs: zero
Mentions of Social Security recipients who can no longer get help by phone: zero
Promises to prevent America from sliding into autocracy: zero
Regrets expressed about children dying because he helped gut America’s foreign health aid: zero
It’s great that he’s visiting local businesses and organizations, but meeting people isn’t the same as standing up for them. And by that standard, John McGuire seems to have done little worth reporting on this week.
One final entry in the McGuire Index:
Days since his last town hall: 24
This is the best publication. Whoever you are, you are so appreciated. I called McGuire this week (I call often) and once again found that the quite nice guy who usually answers the phone was away. I left message: "If you care about children, you must oppose the dismantling of the Dept. of Ed. For once, have the courage to disagree and stand up to Trump. Do the right thing." No response expected.
As you may or may not have seen in the news, Indivisible Charlottesville invited McGuire to a town hall meeting during the March Congressional recess, but he didn't even have the courtesy to acknowledge the invitation. That makes another thing he wasn't doing. We'll try again for the April Congressional recess. Could end up being another one of those empty chair town halls that we've been seeing on TV.
