McGuire to 10,000 constituents: I love you, but you're fired
No help for the thousands of federal employees represented by McGuire.
Elon Musk sent his second email to more than 2 million federal employees this weekend, asking them what they did last week. As far as I can tell, Rep. McGuire hasn’t made any public comments about these emails, at least not proactively. I asked his office for a comment, which I’ll share in a moment.
First, though, let’s look at how many federal employees live in the 5th district. I’m learning that it’s not always easy to find data that’s broken down by congressional district—by state, city, and county are more common—but in this case, we have solid numbers reported by the U.S. government, courtesy of the Congressional Research Service.
According to the CRS report, roughly 10,800 of our neighbors in the 5th work for the federal government. I say “roughly” because the report gives a margin of error, so it could be as low as 8,800 or as high as 12,800. Note that these are civilian jobs, and the data is for 2023.
What does Rep. Mcguire have to say to people fearing for their jobs?
Here’s the reply I got by email a couple days after I contacted his DC office about the threatened firings.
Thank you for your recent message. I appreciate hearing from you and value the opportunity to engage on the issues that are important to you. While on the campaign trail, President Trump made promises to the American people. Since taking office on January 20th, the President has taken action to fulfill his promises. Through appointments, Executive Orders, and the actions of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the President and his Administration are working to make our country’s future brighter for all Americans. I am aware that many disagree with the President’s actions or the speed at which he is implementing his agenda, but our country cannot wait. Our nation is in a dire state. Every day we spend more money than we bring in and our government does not operate as efficiently or transparently as it should. While I understand some may be upset with the President’s actions and believe his actions are unconstitutional; they are not. The Judicial Branch has the power to decide whether any of the President’s actions are unconstitutional. For example, President Biden signed several Executive Actions—such as the student loan repayment program—that were subsequently struck down by the United States Supreme Court. After this ruling President Biden ignored the Supreme Court and chose to forgive student loan debt through his Department of Education on numerous occasions. For clarity, President Biden’s decision to ignore the Supreme Court’s ruling was unconstitutional. I wholeheartedly support the President and his actions to make our nation great again. It is past time that we start implementing policies that will increase our national security, boost our economy, and cut down on our egregious spending. Our national deficit increases every day and if we continue on this path, I worry about the state of our country that our children and grandchildren will inherit. As your elected representative in Washington, D.C. I believe it is my responsibility to ensure we take all the necessary measures to cut down on waste, fraud, and abuse and lower our national deficit. Our future generations deserve better, and I will fight for a better, brighter future for all Americans. Thank you again for sharing your views with me. To be fair, he took pains during Wednesday’s town hall to tell all the callers that he loves us, whether we voted for him or not. So there’s that! You may not have a job soon, but you’ll always have his love.
